FOREX 101: Make Money with Currency Trading

For those unfamiliar with the term, stockstackup.com" title="forex">forex (FOReign EXchange market), refers to an international exchange market where currencies are bought and sold. The Foreign Exchange Market that we see today began in the 1970's, when free exchange rates and floating currencies were introduced. In such an environment only participants in the market determine the price of one stockstackup.com" title="currency">currency against another, based upon supply and demand for that stockstackup.com" title="currency">currency.
forex is a somewhat unique market for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is one of the few markets in which it can be said with very few qualifications that it is free of external controls and that it cannot be manipulated. It is also the largest liquid financial market, with trade reaching between 1 and 1.5 trillion US dollars a day. With this much money moving this fast, it is clear why a single investor would find it near impossible to significantly affect the price of a major currency. Furthermore, the liquidity of the market means that unlike some rarely traded stock, traders are able to open and close positions within a few seconds as there are always willing buyers and sellers.
Another somewhat unique characteristic of the forex money market is the variance of its participants. Investors find a number of reasons for entering the market, some as longer term hedge investors, while others utilize massive credit lines to seek large short term gains. Interestingly, unlike blue-chip stocks, which are usually most attractive only to the long term investor, the combination of rather constant but small daily fluctuations in currency prices, create an environment which attracts investors with a broad range of strategies.
How FOREX Works
Transactions in foreign currencies are not centralized on an exchange, unlike say the NYSE, and thus take place all over the world via telecommunications. Trade is open 24 hours a day from Sunday afternoon until Friday afternoon (00:00 GMT on Monday to 10:00 pm GMT on Friday). In almost every time zone around the world, there are dealers who will quote all major currencies. After deciding what currency the investor would like to purchase, he or she does so via one of these dealers (some of which can be found online). It is quite common practice for investors to speculate on currency prices by getting a credit line (which are available to those with capital as small as $500), and vastly increase their potential gains and losses. This is called marginal trading.
Marginal Trading
Marginal trading is simply the term used for trading with borrowed capital. It is appealing because of the fact that in forex investments can be made without a real money supply. This allows investors to invest much more money with fewer money transfer costs, and open bigger positions with a much smaller amount of actual capital. Thus, one can conduct relatively large transactions, very quickly and cheaply, with a small amount of initial capital. Marginal trading in an exchange market is quantified in lots. The term "lot" refers to approximately $100,000, an amount which can be obtained by putting up as little as 0.5% or $500.
EXAMPLE: You believe that signals in the market are indicating that the British Pound will go up against the US Dollar. You open 1 lot for buying the Pound with a 1% margin at the price of 1.49889 and wait for the exchange rate to climb. At some point in the future, your predictions come true and you decide to sell. You close the position at 1.5050 and earn 61 pips or about $405. Thus, on an initial capital investment of $1,000, you have made over 40% in profits. (Just as an example of how exchange rates change in the course of a day, an average daily change of the Euro (in Dollars) is about 70 to 100 pips.)
When you decide to close a position, the deposit sum that you originally made is returned to you and a calculation of your profits or losses is done. This profit or loss is then credited to your account.
Investment Strategies: technical analysis and Fundamental Analysis
The two fundamental strategies in investing in FOREX are technical analysis or Fundamental Analysis. Most small and medium sized investors in financial markets use technical analysis. This technique stems from the assumption that all information about the market and a particular currency's future fluctuations is found in the price chain. That is to say, that all factors which have an effect on the price have already been considered by the market and are thus reflected in the price. Essentially then, what this type of investor does is base his/her investments upon three fundamental suppositions. These are: that the movement of the market considers all factors, that the movement of prices is purposeful and directly tied to these events, and that history repeats itself. Someone utilizing technical analysis looks at the highest and lowest prices of a currency, the prices of opening and closing, and the volume of transactions. This investor does not try to outsmart the market, or even predict major long term trends, but simply looks at what has happened to that currency in the recent past, and predicts that the small fluctuations will generally continue just as they have before.
A Fundamental Analysis is one which analyzes the current situations in the country of the currency, including such things as its economy, its political situation, and other related rumors. By the numbers, a country's economy depends on a number of quantifiable measurements such as its Central Bank's interest rate, the national unemployment level, tax policy and the rate of inflation. An investor can also anticipate that less quantifiable occurrences, such as political unrest or transition will also have an effect on the market. Before basing all predictions on the factors alone, however, it is important to remember that investors must also keep in mind the expectations and anticipations of market participants. For just as in any stock market, the value of a currency is also based in large part on perceptions of and anticipations about that currency, not solely on its reality.

FOREX investing is one of the most potentially rewarding types of investments available. While certainly the risk is great, the ability to conduct marginal trading on FOREX means that potential profits are enormous relative to initial capital investments. Another benefit of FOREX is that its size prevents almost all attempts by others to influence the market for their own gain. It's Friday June 9, 2006, and yesterday was a wild day, the Dow dropped over 177 points at one point and was down for most of the day and the money started flowing in at about 2:50pm EST giving a small boost to the Dow and it finally closed up a pinch, just over 7 points.. The bottom line here is that you have to begin looking at stocks on an individual basis and don't continue to look at the S&P, the Dow or the Nasdaq Composite as a gauge because it will not guide you through this rollercoaster ride.
This is why we feature individual stocks and give our outlook based on the company and the industry. If the stock is not a slave to the Dow but gets dragged down in the process you should be all over it because that is an opportunity.
This market will continue to go up and down and sideways until there is some clarity in regards to an interest rate hike. This is not just a problem for U.S. markets but worldwide and if anyone tells you any different they are not doing you a service. Interest rates around the globe were raised yesterday as inflation worries loom.
We received plenty of emails from our listeners and readers asking for direction, asking us whether they should buy, sell or hold a particular issue. Movers and Shakers
Some major movers in yesterdays trading session include Overstock.com (NASDAQ: OSTK), which traded up $1.56 to close at $23.16, now we are talking about a company that has negative earnings to the tune of $1.20a a share. It is bouncing off of its 52 week low of $20.89, so in other words this is a dead cat bouncing. Even with they added a quicker checkout process on their site by implementing AuctionCheckout.com's online payment service, this still won't bring it back to life. Companies that actually earn money were driven down on Thursday and there was no real reason why this puppy made upward movement, it's an anomaly I guess.
Allegheny Technology (NYSE: ATI) traded up $3.50 to close on $62.75, now it wasn't as simple as the stock just moving up, it went down with the rest of the market, traded as low as $54 78 before the buying starting flowing back into the stock. When you see a stock like Allegheny Tech traded down that low and that fast you have to find out why, nothing fundamentally changed with the company. Actually Leo Larkin an Analyst with Standard & Poor's Equity Research recently upgraded the stock from a Sell to a Hold., he actually forecasted 2006 earnings of $4.40 for the company, they posted an EPS of $3.60 for 2005, so S&P sees growth. These are the type of companies that you have to seek out, those that are oversold for no good reason. The demand for Stainless Steel will continue to grow in aerospace and power generation, so they may live up to Larkin's expectations.
Fluor Corp (NYSE: FLR) traded up $3.24 to close at $88.58, the global engineering, procurement, construction, operations, maintenance and project management service provided dropped over $3 on Wednesday, traded as low as $82.93 on Thursday and powered up to close up over $3.24 for the day. The stock was trading over $100 a share this past May and was hammered down, this is one that could creep back up to the $95
Autozone (NYSE: AZO) traded up $2.48 to close at $93.00, this came on the heels of the former President, Vice Chairman and Director of Borders (NYSE: BGP) George R. Mrkonic, Jr joined the board of directors of Autozone. So that is the reason for the movement, this all came to light on Wednesday after the close. Now Autozone is about $10 off its 52 week high and sits with an EPS of $7.30 and a P/E of 12. With Mrkonic giving his input at Autozone you'll see this one back in the triple digits.
Other stocks that made moves on the upside include Allergan Inc (NYSEL AGN) which traded up $3.79 to close at $102.27, Giant Industries (NYSE: GI) traded up $3.19 to close at $62.70, Noble Corporation (NYSE: NE) traded up $2.39 to close at $67.53, Occidental Pertroleum (NYSE: OXY) traded up $22.6 to close at $96.98 on its way back to $100, Apple Computer (NASDAQ: AAPL) traded up $2.19 o close at $60.76, this is a stock that should be in the $70 range, Comtech Telecommunications (NASDAQ: CMTL) traded up $1.80 to close at $32.88, Whirlpool Corp (NYSE: WHR) traded up $1.76 to close at $84.50 as they company is looking to trim some fat and Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) traded up $1.62 to close at $72.62.
Under Ten
Now lets take a look at movers in the market under ten bucks, Globix Corp (AMEX: GEX) a blast from the past, I remember when this stock was in the $50 range, but that was a long time ago and on a different exchange, but the stock traded up 55 cents to close at $4.80, Nitromed (NASDAQ: NTMD) traded up 35 cents on nice volume to close at $4.99, Cortex Pharmaceuticals (AMEX: COR) traded up 35 cents to close at $3.32, Alliance One International (NYSE: AOI) traded up 27 cents to close at $4.47, Isolagen (AMEX: ILE) traded up 22 cents to close at $2.85 on close to 2 million shares traded and Generex Biotechnology (NASDAQ: GNBT) which traded up 14 cents to close at $1.85.
Downers
Apollo Group (NASDAQ: APOL) slipped down $1.59 to close at $53.88, the company is involved in the higher education for adults business, they operate through their subsidiaries The University of Phoenix, Inc, Western International University, Inc., Institute for Professional Development and The College for Financial Planning, Inc. There was no news yesterday on the company so maybe it was just driven down by market conditions, but just because there was no news on Thursday does not mean that something will not surface today. There has been a changing of the guards at the company, take that into account with a potential slowdown in enrollments and you are in the dark waters. The stock is close to its 52 week low of $47.27 but seems to have support in the high $51 to low $52 range. Lets see how it shapes up today.
Focus Media Holdings (NASDAQ: FMCN) dropped down again on Thursday and its just about getting to a good entry point. The bottom here should be in the $48 to $50 range but that doesn't mean that it will hit that point, if it does then we'll sit on the sidelines because it could slip into the high $30 range. The stock traded down $8.07 to close at $51.56 and there were a few factors involved, first it hit a ceiling for the third time in a row as we mentioned at $68 and second they filed to sell 1,000,000 American Depository Shares or ADS's. So here's the game plan, you need to see if the stock is actually going to bottom yet, and it looks like it just might. Market conditions may just push it down into the $50-$51 range so you have to pick your entry point.
Matria Healthcare (NASDAQ: MTRA) was knocked down even before the bell range and that was for a few reasons, of course the obvious Market Conditions and the main reasons was that they lowered their full year forecast from $1.35-$1.50 to $1.10-$1.17. Now they did this because they anticipated a delay in various contracts that they have on tap. But the street was looking for $1.10 for the full year anyway so they should be in line with that number. I think that this is just overdone and you had money whipping out from a few institutions and that started a domino effect as small investors started to bail. This looks like an opportunity because the bleeding should be pretty much over and the street will realize that if not today very shortly. So take a look at the charts, fundamentals and the press releases and you'll get the picture. It closed at $22.12 down $5.24.
I just want to touch on Peru Copper (AMEX: CUP) quickly, we received a ton of emails and calls in regards to the company because it halted trading on Wednesday with no follow up. We spoke about it on Thursday and the bottom line is that speculators thought that Southern Copper (NYSE: PCU) was going to buy Peru Copper but that seemed to be far fetched, even though PCU made public statements in regards to it a week or so ago. So that could be a dead deal but do not sleep on Peru Copper because they did hint that there are other potential suitors that have showed an interest in their Toromocho project. The stock pulled back a bit but that was the speculators jumping ship once they were done bottom fishers started picking up the scraps, keep in tune with Peru Copper as it just may shock you in a good way in the coming months.
Know lets talk about a real smack down and a half, Joseph A. Bank (NASDAQ: JOSB), we alerted "Wall Street to Main Street" subscribers about this one before bell as the company missed the mark by a long margin as they announce earnings of 32 cents a share but the street expected 46 cents a share. Investors woke up to a nightmare with this one, and its probably not over yet. The stock closed down $10.73 to close at $26.40 making a new 52-week low.
InfoSonics (AMEX: IFO) has been getting beaten up this week, especially after it received a nice downgrade from a Buy to a Hold by Kaufman Brothers They will be splitting 2 for 1 shortly and right now the stock is about 10 points off of its recent 52-week high. We're sticking by this one as we still see it trading in the $20 post split. Now it may not happen immediately but it should settle in there once the street realizes the company's true value. It powered up from a low of $21.10 on Thursday to close at $23.60.
Hansen Natural (NASDAQ: HANS) dropped another $9.37 to close at $161.00, this has been a daily occurrence with the stock so you may be seeing lots of profit taking from those investors and institutions that own the stock below the $100 mark, and who could blame them with the run that this one made in a 12 month time frame.
Other stocks that traded down but shouldn't be down there include China Life Insurance (NYSE: LFC) which traded down $4.67 to close at $58.69, Expeditors International (NASDAQ: EXPD) traded down $3.88 to close at $94.59, Parlux Fragrances (NASDAQ: PARL) traded down $3.25 to close at $20.85, UBS AG (NYSE: UBS) traded down $2.93 to close at $107.50, Toyota Motor (NYSE: TM) traded down $2.87 to close at $101.49, Kookmin Bank (NYSE: KB) traded down $2.80 to close at $74.70, Wesco International (NYSE: WCC) traded down $2.72 to close at $60.68 and PetroChina Co (NYSE: PTR) which traded down $2.59 to close at $99.41.
Now some stocks under ten bucks that received the royal smack down on Thursday include Finisar (NASDAQ: FNSR) which traded down $1.11 to close at $3.36 down about 25%, Exide Technologies (NASDAQ: XIDE) traded down 40 cents to close at $4.40, U.S. Energy Corp (NASDAQ: USEG) traded down 35 cents to close at $4.10, Advanced Semiconductor (NYSE: ASX) traded down 33 cents to close at $4.56 and Triquint Semiconductor (NASDAQ: TQNT) which traded down 30 cents to close at $4.68.
Analyst Upgrades/Downgrades
Recent Analyst upgrades include International Rectifier (NYSE: IRF) was upgraded to an Above Average from an Average by Caris & Company, Zale Corporation (NYSE: ZLC) was upgraded to an In-Line from an Underperform by Goldman Sachs, Service Corporation International (NYSE: SCI) was upgraded to an Overweight from an Equal Weight by Lehman Brothers, CNET Networks (NASDAQ: CNET) was upgraded to a Buy by Stifel Nicolaus, and SBA Communications (NASDAQ: SBAC) was upgraded to an Outperform from a Peer Perform by Bear Stearns.

It seems to me, as a person who follows these things, that the stock market is not really sure what to do at the moment. One day it goes up a hundred, the next day it is down a hundred. The fundamentals of the market are very strong however the credit crunch is hanging over it like a dark satanic cloud, so how will the stock markets of the world perform in 2008?
I am a very positive thinker and am also a risk taker. I strongly believe in the concept of risk and reward and am a willing investor of stocks and shares. I am currently investing into various areas of the world on a monthly basis. This strategy is known as pound cost averaging and is very popular in these turbulent times. When unit prices fall you are able to purchase more units for your monthly premium etc.
At the back of my mind is the realisation that a stock market crash could be imminent and for that reason I am keeping in reserve quite a large amount of money which I will invest if such an event takes place. I am somebody who likes to invest on the stock market in the aftermath of a dramatic fall as I believe that most of these sharp declines are as a result of an over-reaction and because of panic selling on the part of novice investors.
If there is more bad news on an economic front such as a deepening of the credit crunch or a series of profit warnings from some of the major companies on the index then share prices may well fall. A major terrorist atrocity may also lead to a stock market crash. These are situations which could well happen and is the reason why I am keeping some cash back.
As already stated I am a positive person and actually believe that the stock market will end 2008 around ten percent higher than where it began at the start of the year. The market, in my opinion, is strong and robust enough to with stand the current problems and historically does well in the years when Americans vote for a new President.

The tecnniques mentioned are quite simple but the writer proved it in academic way. moreover, it helps you trust your decision be offering a foundation for why? when? and how. This book does not help you in selecting the right stock, evaluating it ...etc. The main focus (which is really achieved for me) is to help you design your entry and exit points scientifically with no emotions.

I would suggest this book to those wanting to slowly work their way to a successful career in risk taking. For those already there, I would suggest it as a framework to contrast and enrich their own styles.

There is nothing new in it. If you have already read for example "Trade your way to financial freedom" (a much better read by the way), you will learn about nothing in this book.

The style of the book is quite academic but all presented things are extremely simple. Everything is very much detailed with obvious formulas or repeating the same stuff for the short side (exactly symmetric) after having been explained for the long side, perhaps in order to reach the critical number of 200 pages for the book.

I wonder what is the motivation for this book since there is nothing new. A result of the Wiley Trading frenzy to publish?

Regardless of program trading or high-frequency trading, it is based on quantitative techniques, which makes the book "Quantitative Equity Investing -- Techniques and Strategies" interesting, particularly so for these who want to understand what these "crazy" quants from Wall Street are doing and outsmart the markets or market makers.

In a recent newspaper article by Chuck Jaffe entitled Retiring when the market is down is costly if stocks provide nest egg, the question is asked by John, a participant in an investment seminar, "Is this a bad year to retire?"
Although retirement may seem like a lifetime away, it's a question that we will all one day have to consider.
In this case, the answer would be "yes" to John although he has $400,000 invested in 18 stock funds. The fact that comes barreling out at people from left field is that if you must withdraw funds from your retirement savings when the market is in the toilet and that loud sucking sound is the additional dollars flying out of your portfolio, you can ruin your nest egg.
It's ironic that people can spend their whole lives preparing for retirement only to find that when the time comes to retire, they can't do it.

The Rental House Option
What could John have done differently? Get born to wealthy parents? Have Warren Buffet crash into his car? Maybe something less dramatic, but requiring similar foresight and planning.
Home ownership is widely recognized as a way to generate wealth. Can you get wealthy by being a renter? Maybe, but the odds are against you. In 2004, the average renter had a net worth of $4,000, while the average home owner had a median net worth of $184,000. If owning one house is good, wouldn't owning 2 or 3 be better?
Let's imagine that John bought a house soon after he started his professional life and got married. He lived in his house for 6 to 7 years then bought a better house, as most people do. But, unlike what most people do, John kept his old house to rent out. Six or 7 years later, John does the same thing again. Now John owns 3 houses. He has tenants in two of them who pay off the mortgage and provide rental income for John.
A Different Answer
Fast forward a few years and John again asks the question "Is it a bad year to retire?". This time he may get a different answer.
John has 3 houses "free and clear" with mortgages paid off. He's got a good chunk of money coming in each month in rent, and he makes no payments on his residence.
Unlike stocks, he doesn't have to remove money from his savings or from his stockstackup.com" title="investments">investments. His house steadily increases in value when he retires, while he continues to collect rent, which also is constantly increasing in the long-term. With rents providing perhaps 40-50% of his income, if he collects a pension and starts taking social security payments, he is set to retire with barely a change in lifestyle.
In reality, having rental properties is like getting a retirement pension before you retire.
And, John has the option to sell a house to fill up his checking account or to help out one of the kids. He will still have a steady cash-flow from the remaining rental house. If he wanted to cash out and sell both properties, or all three and move into a smaller place, he would be sitting on a small fortune.
No matter how you slice it, John has greatly increased his chances for a successful segue way into his golden years.

I wanted a book that would take me step by step through all the technical day trader jargon and explain what all of it meant. Getting Started in Online Day Trading by Kassandra Bentley was just what the doctor, or in this case, the beginning day trader ordered. She takes a very solid approach to explaining what the stock market is all about, what day trading is all about, the procedures of doing day trading and the pitfalls of day trading.

She is not shy in pointing out other books in order for you to gather good day trading information. This shows that she is very open to learning. Her book does a good job of not assuming that the reader already knows all about day-traderese. There are plenty of sidebar notes that refer to terms and phrases within each chapter. This is a very good way of reinforcing what you have just read. One specific area that was very clear in explanation are the terms bid and ask. While other books use these terms almost interchangeably and do not explain correctly who is the buyer and who is the seller, she does an excellent job of clarification on this subject. This point is probably obvious to old pros, but her insight that a beginner is not savvy to these nuisances is good thinking on her part.

She also goes into some detail on charting and day trading methodology, but not too much in depth. If anything, this was the only negative about this book. However, after reading other books on day trading, I believe that this book is the most straight forward and understandable of all of them. The book is well thought out and very concise.

Regardless whether you're daytrading or not, it's full of layman's terminology in order to understand the complex nuts and bolts of trading in general. Yes, there can be information overload as one reviewer stated ... which is why I found this book invaluable. It's technical, without being stodgy and complicated. The sidebar definitions are fabulous for quick access to terms. I found it to be logically and succinctly organized ... and allows the reader to learn as little or as much as they need. Ms. Bentley states up front that daytrading may not be for the lighthearted, but even daytraders needed to start somewhere. With many individuals trading from their desktop computers, it's important to learn as quickly as possible with as much correct information as possible. Take one trade at a time, utilize the directions ... do the "faux" tutorials on other sites where you don't have to lose money. Then if you find daytrading IS for you, "Online Day Trading" can be your bible. Thanks greatly, Ms. Bentley ... it helped me considerably!

This book is ok for a trader that needs to start from scratch. But you will be needing more specific trading strategies.

Keep in mind that the stock market doesn't really care if you are beginner. The rules and the trading opportunities are the same for every one. When you trade you compete against more seasoned traders, therefore you MUST go beyond the basics and employ a clear strategy to make your buy and sell decisions.

There are many "fantastic" strategies outhere, but you need to test them in order to discover which ones help you the most. That's part of your homework as a stocktrader. Test, test and test again.

Complicated systems that rely on a "boat load" of technical indicators can make you slow, and being slow in this game can be as dangerous as not knowing what to do in the first place.

I think the worst thing that can happen to a beginner trader is to get information overload. It's better to go step by step, and test a simple strategy that can show you how to focus on concrete ways to make money.

Fortunatly there are some good sites on the web today that can show you how to trade in a practical and effective way. One of those sites is Stress Free Traders ( StressFreeTraders com)

This book was a waste of money. It's meant for beginners that aren't familiar with the terms and concepts of stock trading in general. If you don't already know these terms or the basic concepts you shouldn't attempt to day trade. If you do know these terms and concepts, then this book is a waste. The day traders survival guide is a much better intro book and I highly recommend it over this one. Other recommended trading books to start you off are High Probability Trading by Marcel Link and Trading for a Living by Alexander Elder.

I recommend reading this book first then moving on to Jason Kelly's "The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing." These two together will be all you need to get in the game!

All of us are willing to accept different levels of risk. This is true whether it's buying a home, a pet, having children, developing a relationship, or on the job.
Risk becomes a much different thing when we are considering trading in the stock market. Market changes happen not just daily, but often there are significant market fluctuations during any single trading day.
A well thought out and implemented trade plan, while it will help minimize risk, there is no such thing as a stock market trade that lacks any risk at all. The following scenarios are possible when trading in the stock market:
Make a profit on purchase/sale
Break even on purchase/sale
Lose fees and charges from broker on purchase/sale
Lose part of investment on purchase/sale
Lose all of investment on purchase/sale
A) Make a profit on purchase/sale
In order to secure a profit on the purchase and sale of any stock market investment (or other stockstackup.com" title="investments">investments) you must sell at a higher price (including fees) than you purchased the investment for.
B) Break even on purchase/sale
You purchase a stock at 12.75 per share and the fees you incur from your broker add up to about 1.25 more per share and you sell your shares at 14.00 per share resulting in a break-even trade.
C) Lose fees and charges from broker on purchase/sale
You purchase a stock at 12.75 per share and the fees you incur from your broker add up to about 1.25 more per share and you sell your shares at 12.75 per share resulting in a loss of fees and charges on the trade.
D) Lose part of investment on purchase/sale
You purchase a stock at 12.75 per share and the fees you incur from your broker add up to about 1.25 more per share and you sell your shares at 12.00 per share resulting in a loss of fees and charges as well as .75 per share on the trade.
E) Lose all of investment on purchase/sale
This is a scenario that many traders will not have to deal with, although many stockstackup.com" title="options traders">options traders face this scenario on a regular basis. In a stock (equity) trade, this would occur only if you owned shares and a company went bankrupt, but in an option trade, you may purchase an option which may expire with no value (and unable to be exercised) resulting in a complete loss of your investment.
When determining your risk threshold, you will want to take into consideration the following;
How much am I willing to invest per trade
Am I willing to risk losing 100% of my investment
can I afford to take the risk of losing 100% of my investment
How much am I willing to invest per trade?
Clearly the more you are willing to invest, combined with the risk you are willing to take will have an impact on potential profit. As a rule of thumb, the higher the risk the higher the reward, and therefore the more you're able (or willing) to invest the more you are likely to gain (or lose). When determining how much you are planning to invest in a single trade sees how it first fits into your overall trade plan and carefully weigh the risk and the benefits of that trade.
Am I willing to risk losing 100% of my investment?
If you are unwilling to risk a 100% loss on a single trade, then you should not be considering an option trade. Since options pose specific risks, there is always the possibility of losing 100% of the investment in that instrument.
Can I afford to take the risk of losing 100% of my investment?
It is critical when you are setting out your preliminary trade plan that you carefully evaluate your personal financial situation. It is not a good plan if you are risking funds that you cannot afford to risk.
Clearly, those investors in their 20-30's have a 'higher' risk tolerance than an investor in their 50's or 60's. However, a good trade plan (designed by you with advice from your financial advisor if needed) should take into consideration not only your risk, but should also take into consideration your age. Lowering risk as we near retirement is simply smart investing.

It is unusual for an ordinary scientist - by that I mean one of the number of working professionals capable of contributing research to major journals but perhaps not winning the Nobel Prize - to write an autobiography. I appreciated Derman for putting down his life story because it has considerable resonance with my own. We were both trained in elementary particle physics and quantum field theory at top universities during the same years, and, due to the Ballet Dancer effect, both of us later had to fiind a transition to some other career path. (The Ballet Dancer effect means that in highly compelling activities such as violin, ballet, or fundamental physics, the tens of thousands of students who become enraptured and devote their early years to these disciplines ultimately come up against the reality that real-life jobs exist only for a very small number. The rest of us open neighborhood ballet schools with names like Miss Pauline's Academy of Dance, or go to work in industry.) Derman conveys some of the excitement of the 1970's as the standard model emerged and looked for verification; a heady time. He was able to make some contributions of his own. He also talks about his life as a graduate student in a department which was not well managed nor concerned with its students' career development, unfortunately all too common.

After some frustrating years, Derman ultimately found his metier in financial modeling. Ironically, the best and most collegial academic atmosphere he experienced was not in a university but at Goldman Sachs. There he made significant contributions to the mathematics of derivatives pricing, building on the Black-Scholes model which has been called the only real achievement of economics theory. This part of the book is stimulating and one gets a feeling for the issues and challenges. I was happy that he found himself; also I would say that Derman is too modest - not every theoretical physicist would have his facility and intuition for finance. But what the heck is a swaption?

If I had reviewed this in 2004 when the book came out, I would stop here. But following events of the last two years, it is impossible to ignore that the financial innovations Derman worked on - mortgage backed derivatives and obscure risk swaps - are the very ones which came close to vaporizing the world economy. These exotic derivatives, when circulated in large volumes, turned out to have potential for destablizing the entire financial system. Derman's book does not give any indication that the global stability issue was even considered in the overheated trading dens of Goldman.

I was reminded of another digression that the physics community took from the path of pure science, namely the atomic and hydrogen bombs. In the latter case theorists were at least decent enough to consider, briefly, whether a thermonuclear reaction set off by an H bomb just might destroy the atmosphere of the earth. The calculations showed that this was not a concern. Probably. At least they thought about it.

Maybe there is something about using the powerful methods of physics for unholy purposes that leads to catastrophe. Beyond the derivatives work that Derman and others pioneered, the quantitative and computational approach to trading has more recently become capable of causing global financial singularities within a matter of minutes. Algorithmic and high-frequency trading - where buy and sell decisions are made by computer programs in milliseconds - are now a real concern. These market strategies, which would not exist if not for the quants, are not so much investing as hacking the world's trading system, and we are now in an era of institutionalized selfishness on steroids, with no safety rules or limits. If financial innovators have no concern for global destabilization - or more likely not even the tools to evaluate it - then they are putting us all at risk and there is no other choice but to damp down their activity by heavy handed government regulation. I would like to know what Dr. Derman has to say about that.

In a couple of days I finished reading this book, and enjoyed immensely the story of his life as a quant.

The statement on page 252 is a thought-provoking and pure reflection of his life.
"We worked hard out of passion, pride, and the pleasure of being thanked, recognized, and appreciated; of course, we also worked for money, but money alone wasn't enough."

It is not just about money alone but passion and research redefined his life and creativity renewed his spirit.

I recommend two everyone to consider reading this marvelous story written in a humble tone but beautiful enough in captivating your soul.

A very interesting account of an early career in Quant Finance - Yuri Turygin -
I think anyone working in (quantitative) finance will get something out of this book. It is unique and there won't be another one like it (impact/success wise), because of how much the world of quant finance has changed over the past 10-15 years. It is written by one of the best authors in both the world of fixed income and the world of equities.

The book is Derman's autobiography which can be divided into three parts: academia, Bell Labs, Wall Street. The first part occupies about half of the book and to be honest it is a little depressing. I gave four stars instead of five because of the first half of the book. Derman describes his grad student years, post-doc years, uncertainty of academic career, his separation from wife and child while he worked in CO all in too much detail and mostly negatively. Like most quants I am familiar with negative sides of an academic career, so I felt it was unnecessary to spend so much time on describing those things. After-all it has little to do with being a quant and it is not why I bought the book.

The chapter about Bell Labs was very interesting. Derman describes the laid back life style at Bell Labs, the department and the people who developed UNIX, shell scripting, etc. He talks about how he himself wrote a compiler for a language aimed at solving partial differential equations. As any quant I love software, so I really enjoyed this chapter. It is also clear that the software development skills that Derman obtained while working at Bell Labs were a major reason he got hired by Goldman.

The Wall Street part describes the life of a research quant. These days there are several types of quants doing very different jobs in finance. Derman does not describe any one of those except for the research quant, i.e. developing new models for pricing and hedging, especially exotic options. He describes the rise of the exotic options market and Goldman's involvement (in a similar fashion to Lewis describing the rise of Mortgage Backed Securities in Liar's Poker. I thought the styles were very similar). A fair amount of the book is devoted to Derman's work with Fisher Black and the creation of the Black-Derman-Toy model. It certainly makes the book very valuable and worth reading.

I read that book because I am a Ph.D. student and I hesitate between an academic life or going to work for a company.
I found the book interesting as the author has been in both worlds, and talks about the good and the bad in each, how his life was, what were his difficulties but what he enjoyed as well.

What I didn't like so much is that the author gives a lot of details about his research in both worlds, and he does not give enough material to understand his results in physics and finance, and I found these parts heavy to read.
He uses many words from physics and finance without enough explanation for me to be comfortable with the text.
So when he got more technical, I just tried to read faster.

But overall it was an interesting book.
We don't hear much in Universities what it is to work in a company, or what we hear is usually negative.
Emmanuel Derman gives another light.

I bought this book right around the time when the internet bubble was about to burst. At that time, the information in this book helped me get a clear view of the steps to take in order to get started in the business of stock trading. The problem with this book today is that the information is outdated.

If you are looking into books on trading, the information in this book will not help you. Some companies like Datek which Carol Troy mentions a lot in this book don't even exist anymore (Datek was bought by Ameritrade). Therefore, if you are a newcomer this book might confused you.

I have nothing against Carol Troy. I think that her writing is very interesting. I am just saying that anyone who is looking into books on trading (not an easy task), will benefit from more well known books.

When I started researching information about day trading this was the first book that I bought. If you are interested in day trading you may find some parts of the book usefull. There are some interviews that are kind of good. The rest is outdated. But if you are a beginner I would sugest that you read Market Wizards or Reminisences of a Stock Operator to get the feel of what it really takes to succeed in this hard but rewarding business.

The author admits she hadn't done any day trading before late 1998, and that she held on to an Amazon short position for more than a year (as it rose one hundred points)! Is THIS someone you want to take money advice from?
Just to give you an idea of what to expect from this book: 1) lots of screenshots of web pages you've probably already visited; 2) lots of references to Troy's three trading tips, which amount to little more than "buy low, sell high" (gee, thanks); 3) a complete lack of information about how to develop day trading skills.
You'll like this book if you're interested in the history of electronic systems available to day traders. Otherwise, pass.

I would have given this no stars but Amazon doesn't allow that. This book was useless except for the laughs I got reading about the authors "daytrading" adventures. For someone serious about daytrading there are MUCH better books out there. If you want to open a browser based online trading account with 00 and do position trading then maybe, possibly, although I doubt it, you might find something of interest in this book.
Don't be misled though - this book has nothing to do with true direct access daytrading. For that check out the excellent "Electronic Daytrading Made Easy" by Sarkovich.

I thought I would take a moment to review one of my all time favorite t investment books, " Trading In The Zone", by Mark Douglas. This is actually the book that helped me start making money consistently in the markets. Before reading this book I was very inconsistent in making profitable trades. If you are like me, you may have some trading behaviors that you are not too proud of and have not served you well such as; getting in too early, getting out too late, being indecisive on if you should get in or stay out.

Do you know what it feels like watching a profitable trade go down the drain because you did not exit when you should have?

I have traded stocks, futures, forex, and options. The forex and futures markets can move so fast they can make your stomach turn. These markets are not for the faint of heart as they can beat a trader to near death and to the point where you will become afraid of your own shadow! I got my battle scars to prove it.

This book definitely helped me get my trading act together to where I finally started making consistent profitable trades! It does not matter if you prefer fundamental or technical analysis, as this book focuses more on you the trader. More importantly, Trading In The Zone gives you the knowledge to replace fear with confidence in your trades and ability to make great trading decisions that will move you from the loosing group to the successful group of traders.

I never make a trade without being in the zone! This book is worth every penny and makes for one of the best investments I have ever made. In fact, I have more than made my money back plus many thousands over from trading in the zone. Another easy and fun read that definitely took my trading game to the next level.

An interesting story about the investment lesson learned by one man's desire to become a llama tycoon. Let's follow my hypothetical friend, Fred, as he pursues his lifelong dream of having a large llama ranch and find out what he learns about investing and the constantly changing llama market.
It all starts one cool, gray, November morning when Fred decided to start a llama ranch. His plan? Spend $100 each month buying as many llamas as he can until he gets a large herd. This month llamas cost $50 each. Fred has $100 to spend, so he buys 2. He is on his way, the first steps toward the wealth and freedom that only a herd of llamas can provide.
It's December now, time to buy more animals. The llama market is just booming and prices have gone up. It seems that everyone wants to buy llamas. They cost $100 each now. Not to be deterred from his quest, Fred buys one more to add to his herd.
January rolls around and llama prices are still at $100 each, and the news media is buzzing about the exciting and wonderful llama market boom we are having. No matter where you go, people are talking about the exciting growth in the llama market. Television commercials play every few minutes with some guy proclaiming, "I expect llama prices to go to $200 in the next few months!" Other wiser and more even-tempered llama analysts warn that the current market is overpriced and the llama "bubble" will burst soon. "Llama prices will fall dramatically", they say. In fact, some even predict that the llama market could collapse completely.
Fred just smiles, and staying true to his original plan, he purchases one more in January.
But then February brings bad news for the llama market. Apparently somebody mixed some risky armadillo futures with some unstable alpaca loans and sold them to investors on the llama market. In a "crash" that happens almost overnight, the price for llamas has plummets to a mere $5 each.
Everybody's herd is now worth 1/20th of what it was in December and January. Now, most llama ranchers would be jumping out of windows at this point, but Fred is undaunted and remains focused on his goal of becoming a llama mogul. He takes the $100 he budgeted and buys several more.
In March, the price has recovered a little bit, but the llama market is still looking bad. Llamas are only selling for $10 each. "Onward!" Fred declares, and he spends another $100.
April rolls around and the llama market has improved a little more. Llama prices have risen to $20 each, so Fred buys some more to add to his growing herd.
Now it's May. Fred has had enough. Those llamas are tearing up the place and they are really smelly, so he decides to RETIRE and sell the whole heard. The problem is that the llama market still hasn't returned to those glorious "Boom Market" prices of last November, December and January. Right now Fred can only sell his animals for $25 apiece. Remembering those glorious days of $100 llama prices, Fred sighs. "Oh well," he thinks. "You can't win them all." So off they go to be sold.
Then Fred gets his check from selling the llamas. Wait a minute! "I made a profit?" Fred exclaims. How'd that happen? Let's take a closer look:
Over a six-month period Fred spent $100 each month purchasing llamas for a total cash outlay of $600.

Trading from Your Gut: How to Use Right Brain Instinct & Left Brain Smarts to Become a Master Trader Reviewed

Curtis Faith has an interesting writing voice, particularly for a trading book author.
There's none of the loudmouth, faux-streetwise braggadocio that makes you want to
throw some trading books against a wall (or through a TV screen).

(Disclosure: I worked around Wall Street in the 80's, hung out in bars with the likes of these guys and generally found them to be as obnoxious then in their twenties as many of them still seem to be now in their fifties.)

In refreshing contrast, Curtis Faith uses jarringly simple and direct language in a prose style that reads so relaxed you might start to wonder if he's some kind of naïve trading savant or a satori-infused Zen monk of the markets. Rest assured Faith has the rational/analytical side of trading covered; what he's presenting to us is his personal viewpoint informed by the ups and downs of life since his early success as a Turtle.

In "Trading From Your Gut", Faith applies the popular Right/Left Brain metaphor to what he regards as the yin and yang approaches of a large majority of traders. The left-brainers are the quants, the technicians who tend to be either strict followers of one or more trading systems, or are certain that any trade they make can be justified by analysis. On the right side are the intuitive traders who are all about feel, emotion, and the psychology of the market - on the surface the very antithesis of the quant worldview, but Faith suggests there's plenty of common ground to be cultivated.

With a title "Trading From Your Gut", Faith is obviously focusing on readers who lean toward an analytical, technical approach and could use some loosening up of their intuitive side.

As an aside, I first encountered the Right/Left Brain metaphor in Betty Edwards' classic, "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" - still in my opinion one of the most effectively organized instructional books I've ever read on any subject (there's a review for you).

I've also read that over the years aspects of Roger Sperry's initial brain research have been challenged and it's now fairly well-established that - yes - there certainly are different areas of the brain that handle different functions but - no - they're not quite so cleanly and discretely partitioned into hemispheres and they don't perform quite so independently as first thought.

Regardless, Right/Left Brain is a vivid metaphor that's ingrained in our culture and there's little popular itching to replace it.

Having read Faith's previous book, "Way of the Turtle", I found it hard at first to regard him was anything but a dyed-in-the-wool left-brainer. In "Trading From Your Gut" however, he claims upfront that he was always of both minds - rational and intuitive - as was his Turtle mentor Richard Dennis.

Faith also displays an admirable humility by admitting 1) the methods he used to great success as a Turtle - primarily trend-following breakouts - don't work as well anymore (presumably because so many institutional traders incorporate the strategy into their programs and systems). 2) Rather than claiming like others to have found the Holy Grail of Trading Approaches, his own decision-making continues to evolve as it embraces over time even more of an intuitive approach.

Instead of applying his insights to a wide variety of trading methods, Faith selects a single, popular strategy, swing trading, and demonstrates how a "whole-brain informed" trader might approach it combining both intuitive and analytical tools. He chooses swing trading because the days-to-weeks time frame of an average trade provides sufficient opportunity for practice. And he believes practicing decision making with real money on the line is ultimately the only way to become truly comfortable doing it.

A major point of the book is that to benefit from intuitive insight traders (and decision makers in general) have to reduce the fear and anxiety they often feel over the decision making process. Using fast-paced day trading to illustrate would likely have been inappropriate for most readers - including myself. (Although someone attuned and comfortable with the pace of day trading would certainly benefit from what Faith has to say.)

Faith's right brain techniques include focusing on patterns in charts rather than the numbers they represent to develop a faster, more efficient way to sift for trading opportunities. At first glance this doesn't appear to be a particularly original idea, with pattern matching tools now standard on most broker websites. But Faith's point is that relying superficially on something such as patterns is just as limiting - and potentially risky - as being constrained by an overly analytical approach. The two sides must reinforce and continually nourish one another.

The final few pages of the book, ironically the afterword, really ties together Faith's strongest points effectively - so much so that I wish he'd presented similar thoughts much earlier in the text. Here Faith discusses techniques to reduce the fear and uncertainty that keep many people from trusting their intuition and clinging instead to an oftentimes false sense of security in hard facts and numbers.

As hinted at above, I have to say a weakness of the book is the overall organization of the material.

Even preface-writer Van Tharp indicated he glossed over the early chapters on well-known examples of Behavioral Finance due to his own background in psychology. Frankly a lot of this will be very familiar to anyone who regularly reads books or articles on money management and investing. I felt a lot of it wasn't essential to Faith's argument and could have been omitted or shortened.

While weighing in at barely 200 pages, the book took an unusually long time to read because the focus drifted between different aspects and examples of intuitive thinking. Perhaps this was inevitable with such a topic. But however interesting the various and sometimes lengthy digressions into brain functioning, grand prix racing, chess, and skydiving were, their ultimate purpose didn't materialize effectively until the end of the book. I got it by the time I reached the end; I just couldn't help at times wishing the book came with its own GPS.

Another small criticism is the use throughout of extracted highlight quotes before they actually appear in the text - often immediately before. I don't know whether the author or editor is the culprit here, but it's a bizarre practice in a book and really gunks up the prose rhythm. If you want to extract quotes for reinforcement, in my opinion, do it after they've appeared at least once.

One last small turn-off for me was being treated to a sneak peek of the next installment in Curtis Faith's "Art of the Trade" trilogy, namely a preview of the author's next book on trading FOREX. Perhaps I'm too much the purist but this kind of promotion at the end always detracts from the experience I've just had and feels like the literary equivalent of a telemarketing call after dinner.

The above criticisms aside, there's clearly good stuff to be found in "Trading From Your Gut": valuable lessons that go far beyond trading, particularly for those who over-analyze decisions to the point of paralysis and are forever hesitant to go against "what the numbers say".

Faith's key point is that rational/intuitive is not an if/else dichotomy. The rational inevitably informs the intuitive, as does the opposite. The more you understand the analytical side of what you're dealing with the more informed your intuitive hunches will be. That's as true of the jazz musician as it is of the athlete as it is of the trader.

"Trading From Your Gut" is a calmly-paced meditation on the author's continually evolving attitude towards decision-making - not just for trading but in all aspects of life.

It's worth a patient and thoughtful read.

I am a currency trader and have a read a decent amount of trading books covering technical analysis, fundamental analysis, and market/trading psychology. This was a tough one to finish. Trading the way Faith suggests in this book is a foolish venture. The content is riddled with holes and the psychology behind what he is saying will not help you be a better trader. I do agree that any person experienced in their field has a certain intuition that runs in the background of their thinking, but this intuition is based on years of study of actual principles tested in real life situations. It's not based on guessing or a "feeling" as that sort of approach is detrimental to trading.

Trading is a skill, and a difficult skill to master. The odds are stacked against you, maybe more than any other professional field. The last thing you want to be doing is making "gut" decisions. A recent best selling book by Malcolm Gladwell, titled Blink, deals with these same concepts you find in Faith's book, and while Gladwell's book is entertaining to read it is not something you should apply to trading. The element of risk that exists in trading is often what lures us into the fight. In the middle of that fight the uncertainty that looms has to be distilled and managed in order to make a decision. The only way to do this is by applying a set of time tested methods coupled with much practice.

A friend of mine recently put a big chunk of money with a forex trader. After 2 trades that resulted in a 50% draw on the account capital he asked the account manager what the heck he was doing putting so much of the capital at risk, and when he questioned the manager about a current losing trade he was in the guy's response was "don't worry, it will turn around." That is the sort of thing that results from the mentality you find in Faith's book. It produces this type of approach to the markets and it ruins accounts.

If you are serious about trading, then steer clear from the material in this book. It's your money at stake.

This is a hard book to review. First, let me say right off, this is one of the best books on trading I have ever read. For me. The question is, is it for you? The reason I say this is that I feel if you are new to trading, or are more of an "investor" (long term style trader) it may not be as good for you. It would all depend on your experiences and background, I think, and how open you are to the ideas presented.

In my fairly long trading career, I've paid my dues and struggled as most do. Made a lot, lost a lot, typical story. I took a few years off from trading and worked on my 'system' and thought about what was going right and wrong for me. Gradually, I eased back in to trading. But I went about things in a very different way. I discounted everything I had read and thought about trading and decided to do it "my way." I set my "system" aside and just traded. I simplified my approach and I trusted my instincts and intuition more. And, bingo! For me, it started to work better than ever before.

Good news, but exactly why and how was this so? I thought about that a lot, but it wasn't until I read this book that I knew the answer. It was because I was now trading using both logic and intuition, in a holistic fashion, and not crippled by over reliance on my left-brain "system." And all that stuff I had "discounted" was stuff I had learned and absorbed and was still there to draw on. Like a baseball player who does not "think" about how to hit the ball, but just does it, I was not over-thinking my trading, I was just "doing it" putting all my hard won knowledge and skills to work and using my right-brain to put it all together and call the shots. (Well, it's hard to explain, but hopefully this gives you the gist. If it sounds like I'm a "hippie" trader...LOL..well, not so. Without the hard work, training and practice, it won't work. Can't just "be" there. You have to do the work.)

But will this book open this door for you? Possibly. But I think you will have to be "ready" and receptive. (So if you buy it and don't "get it" at first, keep it handy on your shelf. It may hit you differently later.)

The author, after a basic introduction to fundamental technical analysis and trading, explains in a friendly and easily understood way, how we use our left brain and right brain in daily life and why both are important to our survival and decision making. And he details how we train ourselves through play and practice with the skills we need. Skills that the right brain can then bring to bear with its unique pattern matching and gestalt style processes. For me, this was a revelation and I suddenly understood what I had been through and why it was working for me. This is important, because this understanding gives one confidence and trust in ones methods.

The book is easy to read and understand and I learned a lot of interesting things about how we think and make decisions. Fascinating stuff. Lots of entertaining anecdotes as examples. The book is not that long, but there is a lot of substance contained in it. Many very useful nuggets of trading wisdom sprinkled throughout. I think the book could have used a few more actual trading examples illustrating how the right brain can take the left-brain knowledge and apply it in "fuzzy" situations, perhaps, but it's all there. The sincere desire of the author to help comes through as well. All in all, a great book if you are ready for it.

As trading books go, it's very reasonably priced and I recommend it highly to anyone who is an active trader.

Trading From Your Gut is Curtis Faith's newest book. Curtis Faith was one of Richard Denis's turtles, and has made millions in the stock market. I have the hope of one day making millions as well in the market and so I figured I'd give this book a read. It was a very interesting, unique, and informative read, though it's not ever going to be the last book you ever read. It's sound principles consist of removing your emotions from the market and don't fight the market.

Right away, for laughs, you should know that Chuck Hays has a whole chapter in this book. Who is Mr. Hays...well, he is Bernie Madoff's long lost criminal brother.
Charles "Chuck" E. Hays, the man behind Crossfire Trading LLC, is now in trouble for running a huge Ponzi scheme and using investor money to buy himself goodies...like a million Yacht. lol!!!

This book was written in 2007, no one knew Mr. Hays was a crook. So just ignore Chapt. 4. It is all lies, or read it to get a peak at his arrogance. Boris and Kathy had nothing to do with him but some people in trading forums are making ridiculous accusations. PLEASE!

This book will not teach you HOW TO TRADE anything in the conventional sense. It will give you insight into the emotions, viewpoints and feelings of some big players. From that, you can 'find' yourself and maybe learn a thing or two.

Some of this book made me laugh, some of it made me acknowledge my own mistakes, and the rest I either learned from or just simply enjoyed for the pleasure of reading.

Do not expect this book to point the way toward the holy grail. All you beginner and arrogant traders will never be happy and need to stop expecting to find it. My successes and failures in trading come from hands on experience coupled with the knowledge a WIDE VARIETY OF SOURCES provided to me. I still have not found perfection, the best and brightest out there have not and you will not either. You will simply learn how to correct your mistakes and get better.

This book is merely a fun, wisdom filled read. Don't expect a course in trading. Just look at it as if you are sitting at the table of some well seasoned traders that are openly discussing trading. There is no lesson plan, there is not set path. But the guy who shuts up and listens will learn from the conversation.

It is really amazing that there are so many different ways to attain success in trading. The key elements are self-analysis, discipline and perseverance.

Unless you are taking the class, this book is of little value compared to a regular book.

This study guide was not very useful to me and I would hesitate to recommend it.

A higher standard in trading books - Alfonso C. Amselem Almor - Barcelona Spain
The book starts with a brief introduction to the fundamentals Dr Elder has been promoting since his first book (how to buy, example setups, psychology and risk management) and then moves to advanced topics (keeping records, where and how to sell, where and how to place stops, how to short and presents a strategy for finding stocks to trade).

All the previous is illustrated with examples from Dr Elder's own diary where you can see how a professional trader executes his trades. Only this point is worth many times the book.

I have read many trading books and it is difficult to find a new book that really adds something new. This book has a lot of material and it is a pleasure to read. I highly recommend this practical hands-on book to everybody that takes trading in a serious way.

Stocks, like the pendulum ball, tend to seek a balanced state, and like the ball, they return to balance and beyond, then fluctuate above and below the neutral position as they eventually return to some state of balance, or non tension state, above, below, or close to the in balance price point.
Do stock prices behave this way while daytrading during the same trading day? Yes and no.
Many stock have a price gap after the market opens (9:30 east coast), as an example. A gap represents the price difference above or below prior day's close (4:00 east coast). These "gappers" can remain in a tension state throughout the trading day, that is, without much change in price. Other gappers can partially fill with price moves toward the day's neutral pivot line. Others can completely fill the gap and then some. And there are stocks that just keep on moving in the direction of the gap open move. These gap stock present unusual opportunities for short term trading to have quick wins with big price moves.
As there is no way to predict how the price of a stock will behave after the market close, a sudden, major price move, like a gap open, can occur, that's why day traders avoid holding stock over night - and that's the distinction between day and swing traders and investors. day traders, new-school day traders are out of their trades in just a few minutes, certainly before the market's close, while swing traders take on huge potential price risk, and investors are trading this way at excess risk.
Day trading stock, we find, is also far more challenging and rewarding. The challenge is to find opportunities to win within a very short time frame that when triggered, price-wise, in either direction. It's rewarding where winning can be frequent and fun. The obvious rewards are financial, but the focus while trading must be on the winning not the money - again, just like it must be for world-class tennis players, golfers, politicians, and senior executives.
Why day trading as opposed to swing trading or investing?
From the fall of 2007 throughout 2008 and part of 2009 were crises times for swing traders and investors, losing 50% of their retirement funds and investment portfolios overall value, whereas the short term day traders made a killing with their quickness and trading objectivity - winning with both upside and downside price moves, applying new-school strategies based on the new rules of trading with far more objectivity than arrogance.

One of the first things to do is to develop a checklist of everything that needs to go to the show. The most obvious will be things like the exhibit display and promotional materials. The Amsterdam Stock Exchange saw the first shares issued by the Dutch East India Company in 1602. The Dutch East India Company was the first to issue bonds and stocks. Continuing as a trader and educator in the stock, commodity and bond markets throughout the early 1900s, Wyckoff was curious about the logic behind market action. Through conversations, interviews and research of the successful traders of his time, Wyckoff augmented and documented the methodology he traded and taught. Wyckoff worked with and studied them all, himself, Jesse Livermore, E. H. Harriman, James R. Keene, Otto Kahn, J.P. Morgan, and many other large operators of the day. Wyckoff implemented his methods outlined in this book, in the financial markets, and grew his account to such a magnitude that he eventually owned nine and a half acres and a mansion next door to the General Motors' Industrialist, Alfred Sloan's Estate, in Great Neck, New York (Hamptons). As Wyckoff became wealthier, he also became altruistic about the public's Wall Street experience. He turned his attention and passion to education, teaching, and in publishing exposés such as "Bucket shops and How to Avoid Them", which were run in New York's The Saturday Evening Post starting in 1922.

It's going to make you sit up and scrutinise your shares and it's going to stop you buying all those lousy ones that are out there. There's no jargon, no long lists of mystic mathematical formulae for working out if a share is 'cheap' or not. This book is for normal, Earthbound people. I really enjoyed this book. It was highly informative and very entertaining and to be honest since reading it my wallet (or virtual wallet) has gotten very rosy cheeked and developed a proper pot belly. If you're new to trading or even if you would consider yourself experienced I would advise you buy this book because trust me it'll be the best money you've ever spent.

Since I bought this book some months ago, I've read it over and over. It's so easy to understand, and its breadth is so comprehensive; it's a godsend for someone like me who used to be a complete duffer when it came to anything to do with stocks, shares and trading. I'd been following the techniques and advice Robbie gives (on paper at first of course!) for several months before I took part in an online spreadbetting competition last month, and won 300 pounds for second place.
I certainly couldn't have done it without taking in the valuable information on every page of this book. The trading strategies are easy to understand, and Robbie's style makes the book a fascinating read. Included is a chapter on investing 'horror stories', submitted by real traders whose mistakes provide an additional education, and confirmation, of the all too real pitfalls that Robbie warns us of whenever we consider buying (or selling) shares. What more can one say? A must-have for anyone serious about trading.

Written in a humourous & down to earth style, free from the usual financial mumbo-jumbo jargon found in most stuffy financial books,this book actually makes you understand, how you can really make money from shares & avoid the pitfalls that almost all new investors make.
In a detailed step by step approach, you learn how to pick a share ( from the hundreds available), research it, follow the chart & find a point on where to buy & sell it at a profit(hopefully).
I only wish that this book was available a few years ago, so that i could have avoided some expensive mistakes!
Whilst a lot of finance books are written by gurus & non trading mentors, this author actually trades for a living.

Larry has a good grasp of an excellent concept in patterns that go beyond the old standard wedges, triangles, head and shoulders type formations. The book would be better if the math he used were correct. Many of the examples have math or geometry errors, confusing the reader. Once you are past that and "do your own homework" as he challenges the reader to do, you will see stocks in a whole different light. Some of the patterns he refers to have a mirror image which can appear as well, even though he does not allude to it. The book is a tad pricey, too.

Huge pages, skinny book with lots and lots of pictures (charts). Basically the book identifies Gartley and Butterfly patterns with a touch of basic fibonacci rules. Over 2/3 of the book consists of full page charts of examples. My advice if you're unfamiliar with these patterns is to go to longorshort. c o m and read about it for free. Larry has some examples on his own page. There are numerous typos that will make you scratch your head about the editors. That said, these patterns can be quite reliable if you open your eyes to them and that information alone is worth learning about ...

I have been trading stocks for about 17 years now and have read LOTS of books on the subject. Mr. Masonson does an outstanding job of laying out everything an investor needs to know regarding market timing. As he mentions in his Introduction, the beginner should begin with Chapter 1 and read the book through in its entirety, but the experienced investor can begin with Chapter 7. He provides an excellent balance of well documented strategies but without getting bogged down in all of the tedious details--he provides the sources for further study if you so desire.

Part 3 of this book is Market-Timing Resources. In it Mr. Masonson provides most every legitimate source for newsletters, websites, advisors and software available. This section is excellent and very complete. It is not just a listing of these resources, but he also includes lots of information about what they include, what niches they serve and the like.

The only other book that I'd read regarding market timing is The Right Stock at the Right Time by Larry Williams. Sure, you could read 20 more books on market timing and in doing so gain an additional 4-5% of actual useful information, but why bother? Everything you really need is included in these two excellent books, both of which are written by men who actually spend the bulk of their time putting their money where their mouth is... and doing so very successfully!

Thus it includes a lot of technical analysis crucial for stock trading as well as options trading. The author mainly takes an contrarian approach to stock and options investing, so many of his recommendations are to find the turning point and bet against the market. On the minus side, the author does not explain anything about the Greeks and how they are used in his trades. But overall I enjoyed reading the book.

I have found one common theme among most option books. They concentrate mostly on theoretical description of option strategies but leave out the explanation on how and when the different strategies should be applied. More importantly I have not come across any books that factor in the technical picture and investor sentiment on a stock and their effect on trading specific option strategies.

This is where this book excels , Both sentiment and technical indicators are taken into account to identify high profit stock trades and show how the profit is further multiplied by using simple option strategies.

Another unique feature in this book is that the author shares a stock scan to identify reversals from a bottom. He then takes the reader step by step through the charts to identify trade candidates. I found this feature very valuable since it allows the reader to identify stocks that can deliver exceptional profits especially when specific option strategies are used.

I was able to use this scan as a template to create other scans for different market conditions. My most profitable is one that identifies stocks breaking out from a flat basing pattern.

By combining this book with one that focuses more on basic option theory; you have command of both , theory and effective application to insure profitable trading

I figured that if an experienced trader who makes his living trading stocks and options and runs a popular website giving trade recommendations to others, picks this book as favorite among his list; it must contain a lot of useful information.

I`ve had the book for only few months and so far I made good profits by applying a couple of strategies. The book contains many more interesting ideas that I am planning to incorporate into my future trading.

I admit that I bought this book principally based on two things -- the numerous enthusiastic reviews and scanning pages 1-7 of the book online, which contains a truly excellent summary of what the author calls principles related to trading. For example, he points out that trading options can generate a lot of retirement income and is overlooked by investment advisors who tell seniors to avoid options. Since I have lived on income from option trading for some years, I would heartily endorse that point of view. I don't see how advisors tell retirees to live on 4% withdrawals from their retirement accounts when one can get pretty consistent returns of 20% with conservative approaches -- but that does take time, attention and understanding.

However, I found the book to be too repetitive, many examples (or perhaps "case histories") not terribly helpful.

When I was done, I felt that I had not gotten + of value in additional education and insight into trading options. On the other hand, one reason I bought the book was because I wanted to see if there was anything to add to my repertoire and I concluded that my approach was working just fine and would be continued -- but I really wanted and expected more trading insights than I felt were presented.

What is Stock?
You can gain ownership rights of a company by investing in its stock. A stock/share is a unit of your partnership in the company. The value of each share of the company is determined by dividing the total capital investment of the company by the number of shares. For example, if the total value of a company is $100 and the number of shares is five, the value of each share shall be $20. If you own one share, you have 1/5th ownership of the company. If you want to increase/decrease your ownership of its stock, you need to buy/sell its shares. The words 'stock',' share', or 'equity' are generally used to convey the same meaning.
Stock Trading
Stock trading, therefore, means buying or selling the shares of the stock of a company. Stock trading takes place within certain parameters of a system. For example, you cannot directly buy the stock of any company from the company itself. You have to buy and sell its shares through a broker who is registered with the stock exchange where the company is listed. The shares are sold and bought at the market prices prevailing at a given point of time. Again, the price of the stock cannot be determined arbitrarily by the seller or the buyer. It is determined by a combination of certain market forces comprised primarily of supply and demand, which in turn, is linked with performance of the company and so on.

As a general practice, it is practically impossible for a person or a group of people to raise the huge amount of capital, which is required to finance a venture. The company decides upon the overall capital required to finance the venture, the number of shares or units and the price of each share. It then appoints brokers to receive subscriptions from the public. This first step is called the initial public offer-IPO.
If you cannot buy the company's stock at the time of its initial offer, you can buy it later on as well, but the price of the share of the company will depend upon its performance and the supply and demand of its shares.
stocks of various companies are traded at stock exchanges like the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation (NASDAQ) and American Stock Exchange (AMEX).
There are two main types of exchanges, physical and virtual.
Physical Exchange
The NYSE is an example of a physical exchange system where stock trading takes place face to face. In other words, there is a concrete building where the trading actually occurs. Most people may be familiar with the chaotic images of the stock exchanges on TV or in movies. Watch the CNBC television and you will be able to see the 'crazy guys with the blue jackets frantically wave about the pieces of paper and yell out prices'.
Virtual Exchange
The second type of stock trading exchange system is the virtual exchange. The word 'virtual' refers to a computer image of a real situation. The virtual exchanges are like computer networks as they are linked to each other through the Internet. The entire trading in stocks and shares takes place electronically. The NASDAQ, also known as the OTC -- over the counter market, is an example of the virtual exchange. Since it is virtual, there is no trading floor like the one at the NYSE. All trading takes place through a computerized network of dealers. The brokers charge commissions both on the sale and the purchase of the shares. The stock of each company is identified by a shorthand code called symbol or a ticker symbol. The symbol usually consists of letters. Sometimes it may be numbers or a combination of letters and numbers, for example, MSFT is Microsoft, C is Citigroup, and GOOG is Google.

I've read alot of books on Day trading, This is one of the best, at least for me it was. The market will move alot of time with no rhyme or reason. You could say it has a schizphrenic personalitly at times, but the one thing you CAN control, and MUST control, is yourself. This books gives a lot of help in that area.

It really helped me, especially the share sizing part. I was really good at losing money with big share sizes. Now that I've down sized my share size ,things have become very controllable. I think alot of us have the same trouble with trying to make big money to fast. When you slow down you can still make money, but at a slower, more controllable pace.

Day Trading can be nerve racking so you must be prepared. Definitly a pay per share account is needed for this type of trading. I Day Traded for awhile with my Scottrade account, way to costly for this type of trading. I think they even had a poster of me in their office that read, we love this guy.

Pretty good book - J. Chanthamontry -
It is a pretty good book for me as a novice trader. It has lots of warnings that is good for beginner but it only has one trading strategy that I can use. It tells me there are pay per share broker that will charge $.70 round trip for 100 shares but I wish it also list a couple of them that I can trust.

I think this book is very interesting even if you don't plan to become a daytrader. The psychological part involved in daytrading is interesting in itself. And Josh is really a good writer. You can't stop reading. It's very useful, very well structured and fun. I would like to say something a little negative to make my review more authentic but I don't know what. I just loved the book. Josh's book is not only a great read, but lays out the hard truth when it comes to being successful at day trading. I think a lot of beginners get lured into the business with the hopes of freedom and fast money, only to find lots of hard work and fast losses. Not knowing what you're doing can get expensive, and Josh gives you everything you need to know about being a rookie trader and how to not lose your shirt in the process.

His emphasis on pay per share brokers, preventing overexposure (100 share block trades to starts), and consistent wins of $.10 $.25 per trade are fantastic for people who can't stomache huge losses. I will be starting Josh's mentorship next week and from what I hear from his previous students it is a great experience. I recommend this book to anyone new to day trading.

Example Quantitative Stock Analysis

I work every day as a programmer on a quantitative stock analysis team that manages billions of dollars in assets. That position has given me a lot of insight into how such a professional quantitative stock analysis process works.
There are a number of distinct steps involved in getting a quantitative stock analysis model running.
Start with a list of stocks. This is the entire domain of stocks that you'll be considering so you might want to include the entire NASDAQ. There are a number of considerations when choosing the stock list. First, the more stocks the longer it'll take for the computer to calculate everything. Second, there are differences in behavior between for example large cap and small cap or between different sectors that make it hard to treat them all the same.
For each stock in the stock list selected the second part of the quantitative stock analysis process is to load all the data you can about them into a database. Some basic information might include price, earnings, forecasted earnings, cash flow, assets, and debt leverage. The more information you can get the potentially more thorough the quantitative stock analysis will be.
Third, with all this basic information about every stock the next thing to do is to calculate indicators. These are usually basic ratios, so from price and earnings you can get the Price-Earnings Ratio, or EPS Yield. If you're maintaining this information over time then you can calculate things like price momentum. This is a vital step to the effectiveness of any quantitative stock analysis model. Tweaking these indicators can have a huge impact on the outcome of the process.
Next there is a mathematical process. Since we can't directly compare price momentum to EPS yield there is an intermediate step that puts everything into standard deviation space. For each indicator we have to calculate it's standard deviation from the mean over all the stocks. This should result in numbers that are roughly within the range -3 to +3. With this calculation done it's possible to compare very different indicators.
Getting close to the end of the process is another very key part of the quantitative stock analysis calculation. To get one final number for each stock you take some weighted combination of the standard deviations of the indicators. It doesn't necessarily have to be a linear calculation. This function decides the importance of the different indicators in the overall analysis. At this point it is also possible to split out a few different final analyses using the same inputs. For example a growth strategy would be heavily weighted towards the growth indicators, and a value strategy would be weighted towards value based indicators. This formula requires lots of back testing to get just right and should be revised from time to time to deal with changes in the markets.
The final step is to rank each stock. Simply sort the stock list by the number that came out of the previous step. The result should be a list of stocks in which the ones at the top are probably the best buys, and the ones at the bottoms are probably the best to short. It's important to remember that the analysis is only as thorough as you make it so if you haven't accounted for things like merger speculation or growth through acquisitions then you may want to do some further checking before placing any orders.
The final list is very valuable and can be used for different strategies. There's still a question about how much of each stock should be bought or sold or whether or not to short the worst ranked stocks. Every investor should decide how to do this on their own based on a lot of back testing.
That's a very high level over view of how a quantitative stock analysis could work. Of course there are many potential variations. There are many trading styles which can be used when trading ETFs. Day trading is merely one of them. But is day trading ETFs such a good idea? Is Day Trading really suitable for the ETF tool?
The value of an Exchange Trade Fund (ETF) is a weighted average of all the stocks that are in it. This means you're less exposed to risk, but it also means that Exchange trade funds tend to move in lower oscillations than regular stocks. An average is always lower than its highest member and higher than its lowest. That's mathematics.
Day trading is basically trying to find stocks or bonds which move in one direction or another. But the shift in price needs to be enough to warrant the trade and make you more money. The lower the shift, the more transactions you need to make a substantial profit.
But we've already established the Exchange Trade Funds shift less radically than specific stocks do (this isn't always the case, but it's only to be expected). So, Day trading ETFs isn't actually that suitable as a rule. It's better to day trade specific stocks. Sure, you can still make money by day trading Exchange Trade Funds, but this investment tool wasn't made for this.
Personally, I don't believe in day trading in general, but if you're going to trade ETFs, you might as well do it in the right way and not the wrong.
